Cultural Doula Wanted for Project in Greater Stockholm
MiraStockholms lÀn, Stockholm
Previous experience is desired
Mira is a non-profit organization running a project with cultural doulas throughout Greater Stockholm. The project aims to support foreign-born pregnant women who are new to Sweden and speak limited Swedish to create more equitable care. The project is funded by the Health and Medical Care Administration in Region Stockholm.
A cultural doula provides support to non-Swedish speaking women before, during, and after childbirth in their own language. The doula meets with the mother/family for discussions during pregnancy, usually on two occasions. The doula supports families in various locations throughout Greater Stockholm. When labor begins, the woman contacts her doula, who then provides support during labor in collaboration with the delivery staff. The doula stays with the family until the baby is born. The doula and parents also meet after the birth for follow-up meetings and support. The doula can bridge the insecurity and lack of communication that often arises when the birthing woman does not speak Swedish and is unfamiliar with how maternity care works in Sweden. By building a relationship with the family and providing continuous support, the doula can create conditions for equitable care and a positive birth experience. The working group meets and receives ongoing training regularly.
Training
Cultural doulas must undergo mandatory training for 9 days.
The main components of the training are:
- anatomy and physiology during pregnancy and childbirth
- normal birth and the transition after childbirth
- providing support to a woman during labor
- breastfeeding and bonding
- the organization and mission of healthcare in Region Stockholm
Applicant's education and experience:
We are looking for women who are proficient in the languages Bengali, Urdu, Spanish, Uzbek, Mongolian, Dari, Swahili, Somali, Tigrinya, Amharic, Arabic, and Swedish. You have cultural competence both from your home country and from Sweden. Experience in Swedish maternity care is an asset.
Training for the position will take place on weekdays at the end of April and during May.
Please note that the position is a needs-based employment. The degree of employment will vary based on incoming assignments.
A driving license (B) is an advantage.
